Funder Briefing:
Stepping Up Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, and across the nation, county jails too often become “de facto mental health systems.” A recent New York Times editorial noted that mental health problems are widespread in local jails, largely reflecting gaps in access to mental health services. National data, widely believed to underestimate the scale of the problem, indicate that nearly two million people with serious mental illnesses are booked into local jails every year.

A new statewide initiative rolling out in Pennsylvania aims to change all that. Stepping Up Pennsylvania works in conjunction with a national Stepping Up Initiative, launched in 2015 by the Council of State Governments Justice Center, the National Association of Counties, and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation.

Join Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Secretary Ted Dallas, vanAmeringen Foundation President Kenneth Kind, state and local practitioners, and Council of State Governments Justice Center staff on June 2nd to learn how Pennsylvania is one of the first states in the country to tackle this challenge head on. Whether you focus on health, criminal justice, youth development or other related community issues, the June 2nd briefing will shed light on how you can be part of this much-needed sea change.

RSVP: By May 30th, to Jenna Lapidus,
