One of our strategic philanthropic pillars, The Vanguard Strong Start for Kids Program™, seeks to give children the opportunity to grow, thrive, and learn, with a focus on improving kindergarten readiness for children growing up in poverty in Greater Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Charlotte (the locations of our largest U.S. offices).

The Vanguard Strong Start for Kids team proactively identifies evidence-based, high-impact programs that operate with a child-centered approach. The program currently utilizes comprehensive strategies that provide family support to mothers and caregivers; support high-quality early learning opportunities in child care; and promote early literacy. Areas of support include direct services; infrastructure support; research and innovation; and public policy analysis and advocacy.

The Associate Program Officer will research, analyze, perform due diligence, and evaluate programmatic activities, with a primary focus on the grant portfolios. They will also support the team in analyzing and identifying trends, and serve as the point person to curate and s6hare information.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

– Leads intake of philanthropic partners. Reviews and responds to letters of inquiry submitted by grant seekers or solicits and analyzes proposals; due diligence tasks for potential grants to assess eligibility and alignment; monitors the progress of existing grantees; reconciles program grants and strategy with the program budget; and grant portfolio reviews.

– Leads efforts to monitor, evaluate, and refine grant making strategies. Maintains and builds content expertise by staying abreast of current philanthropic research and data at the national and local levels.

– Authors written materials for internal and external audiences that summarize active and potential grants and effectively communicate the team’s objectives.

– Communicates regularly with grantees, stakeholders/partners and crew. Delivers messages with professionalism and sensitivity.

– Supports the creation of annual plans (financial and strategic) to support progress toward the team’s objectives, and identify and track gaps and needed adjustments.

– Replicates corporate giving strategies across Vanguard’s domestic and international sites, adjusting for local philanthropic nuances and different legal, compliance, and tax policies.

– Participates in program team meetings, planning, and goal setting. Uses project management best practices to develop timelines and manage delivery and/or execution of the project with highest degree of quality.

– Leads or participates in special projects, as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

– Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.

– Minimum 5 years’ experience working in a program-related support capacity, ideally related to support for low-income children and families.

– Experience evaluating program results, ideally within philanthropic context.

– Experience managing multiple projects at once, thrives in being an agile problem-solver.

– Experience setting priorities in dynamic environments, self-starter.

– Experience collecting and synthesizing input from multiple sources; highly analytical.

– Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.

– Knowledge of all MS Office software; ability to learn and work with department-specific tools (e.g., MicroEdge GiftsOnline; Your Cause).
