Each month the Regional Foundation Center's Inforum newsletter features a local funder, nonprofit, or service provider who highlights their organization's services and how they support the social sector.

This month we are excited to have Jennifer Leith, Executive Director of the Douty Foundation, to talk about the foundation's funding priorities and their upcoming application deadline.

What areas do you enjoy funding?

The foundation enjoys supporting grassroots organizations and movements in Philadelphia and Montgomery counties that are creating positive social change in their communities with an emphasis on children and youth. We have an affinity for groups and organizations whose voice is often marginalized or needs are often unaddressed.

Is there anything you do not fund?

We do not fund organizations that are not tax-exempt under the IRS Code or those without a fiscal sponsor that is tax-exempt. We do not support schools; individuals; sponsorship requests or special events.

What is your best piece of advice for nonprofits?

If possible, reach out and contact the foundation before applying for funding through a phone call. It is an opportunity for the potential applicant to talk about their work and to gain a better sense of the funding priorities of the grantmaker. It can save time in the end for the potential applicant. Also keep your Guidestar profile up-to-date! Many funders and individual donors look to Guidestar profiles for information on nonprofits*.

What is your best word of caution for nonprofits?

While nonprofit staff and leaders are busy, try not to call or email, on the day (or week before) funding applications are due, to see whether you fit the grantmaker's funding priorities. Reach out a few weeks ahead of the deadline.

Do you have an RFP or deadline coming up you would like to highlight?

We do have an application deadline approaching - on March 15th. We begin to accept applications via our online portal beginning February 1st through March 15th. We have a second deadline application date of September 15th. Applications can be submitted beginning August 1st through September 15th.

How has your foundation impacted the Philadelphia area through your funding priorities?

Douty is proud of its niche in helping newer organizations become established and grow. Our Board is willing to 'take risks' and support an idea that seems to have viability and needs some traction with funding.
