Chester County Community Foundation: Event Cancellation and Rapid Recovery Fund Announcement

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

Protecting the community amid growing concerns over COVID-19

(West Chester, PA - March 17, 2020) – During these unprecedented times, the Chester County Community Foundation is extremely thankful for the charitable generosity and continued trust of the community. Increased social distancing, shutdowns, quarantines, health concerns and economic concerns impact us all. To help, the Community Foundation would like to announce the cancellation of a cherished event, and the creation of a recovery fund to help organizations that work with the most vulnerable people in Chester County.

In accordance with official social distancing recommendations from the Chester County Health Department, Sweet Charity originally scheduled for March 30, 2020 has been cancelled. The CDC highly recommends cancelling large events and group gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“While Sweet Charity is a very beloved event, the Community Foundation’s primary concern is preserving the well-being and health of our community,” stated Community Foundation President and CEO, Karen Simmons.

This announcement follows the cancellation of many other large events held throughout the county and the economic repercussions from COVID-19 will likely be widespread and long-lasting.  In response, the Community Foundation is working with county departments, philanthropic partners and nonprofits throughout the Chester County region to coordinate COVID-19 funding initiatives.

Nonprofits, especially those that provide basic needs such as food, access to healthcare, and financial stability support have an immediate increased need for flexible, unrestricted funding to meet heightened needs. The Community Foundation’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund provides flexible resources to Chester County nonprofits that are disproportionately impacted by coronavirus and the economic consequences of this outbreak. For more information on donating to the fund, or applying for grants through the fund, please visit chescocf.org/covidgrant/. General questions & inquiries about the Fund can be directed to grants@chescocf.org.

The Community Foundation urges all citizens to exercise caution and listen to local health officials during this time.
