Anchored in Place:
How Funders are Helping Anchor Institutions Strengthen Local Economies

Anchor institutions such as universities hospitals, and other large enterprises located within urban communities are increasingly prominent leaders in driving inclusive economic growth. Rooted in their communities by virtue of mission, invested capital, or relationships these institutions are deploying a broad range of intellectual, social and financial assets to improve opportunities and outcomes for lower-income communities.

In many cases, national and local funders have played key roles in these efforts, amassing a rich body of experience that can guide broader development and use of anchor institution partnerships and strategies.

Join Charles Rutheiser, co-chair of TFN’s Anchors Institutions Funders’ Group, and Katherine Pease, author of TFN’s new report, Anchored in Place: How Funders are Helping Anchor Institutions Strengthen Local Economies, in an engaging exploration of the practice and promise of anchor-driven economic and community development, and how funders can play a key role in the success of anchor initiatives. The conversation will also feature insight from Patrick Horvath Deputy Vice President of Programs and Director of Economic Opportunity of the Denver Foundation and, Nitika Nautiyal Executive Director of Chicago Anchors for a Strong Economy who are supporting on-the-ground anchors partnerships in major U.S. cities.
